Economic Development Centres (EDC) are made up of regions and combinations of regions. They are regional agencies responsible for various promotional and implementation tasks related to employment, economic development, transport systems and biodiversity, among other things.
The purpose of regional classifications used in statistics is to describe regional variations of various phenomena and regional structure. As most regional classifications, the division into Economic Development Centres (EDC) are based on the administrative regional division. The Economic development centres are government organs and perform the enforcement and development tasks of former ELY centres.
Economic development centres take care of a wide range of tasks related to economic development, employment and culture, immigration and integration, agriculture and rural development, transport, promotion of land use, water management, promotion of biodiversity and good water status, fisheries, as well as the implementation of the EU's regional and structural policy programme and the tasks of the EU funds for Agriculture and Rural Development.
The division of Economic development centres is used in demographic special surveys, for instance.
The Economic Development Centres (EDC) became effective as of 1 January 2026. They consist of regions and combinations of regions.
The classification comprises 10 Economic development centres.
For usability and clarity reasons, Statistics Finland uses the following format in the Swedish and English names of the categories instead of the official translations:
(sv) Livskraftscentralen i Nyland > Nylands livskraftscentral
(en) Economic Development Centre of Uusimaa > Uusimaa Economic Development Centre
Economic Development Centres (EDC) are a classification compiled for national needs.
