The purpose of regional classifications used in statistics is to describe regional variations of various phenomena and regional structure. As most regional classifications, the division of sub-regional units is based on the administrative regional division.
The division of sub-regional units was adopted in 1994 as a basic division of the acts on regional policy (Act on regional development 1135/93). The criteria used for forming sub-regional units have mainly been cooperation between municipalities and employment.
Municipalities, sub-regional units, regions and the statistical grouping of municipalities are the primary regional classifications used in Finland's statistical system. Other municipality-based regional classifications used in statistics are major regions, Regional State Administrative Agencies (AVI) and Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY centres). Types of municipalities include the cost-of-living classification, financial capacity classification, language distribution classification and municipality form classification.
Latest changes (1 January 2010):
Himanka (095) was merged with the municipality of Kalajoki (208) and the area of the former municipality of Himanka moved from the sub-regional unit of Kokkola (162) to that of Ylivieska (177).
Orivesi (562) moved from the sub-regional unit of Ylä-Pirkanmaa (069) to that of Tampere (064).
Hämeenkyrö (108) moved from the sub-regional unit of Luoteis-Pirkanmaa (061) to that of Tampere (064).
Juuka (176) moved from the sub-regional unit of Pielisen Karjala (125) to that of Joensuu (122). Heinola (111), Sysmä (781) and Hartola (081) moved from the sub-regional unit of Heinola (072) to that of Lahti (071) whereby the sub-regional unit of Heinola ceases to exist.
The name of the sub-regional unit of Siikalatva (175) was changed to Haapavesi-Siikalatva. The sub-regional unit code remained unchanged.
The name of sub-regional unit 153 is Sydösterbotten.
Changes as of 1 January 2009
The sub-regional unit of Tammisaari (013), consisting of Hanko (078) and Inkoo (149) and currently also of Tammisaari (835), Karjaa (220 ) and Pohja (696) changed into the sub-regional unit of Raasepori (014).
In addition, the municipality of Soini (759) was moved from Kuusiokunnat (144) to the sub-regional unit of Järviseutu (146).
The following sub-regional units were abolished:
143 Eteläiset seinänaapurit: Merged with the sub-regional unit of Seinäjoki (142).
145 Härmänmaa: Merged with the sub-regional unit of Seinäjoki (142)
102 Juva: Of the municipalities belonging to the sub-regional unit of Juva the municipality of Puumala (623) was merged with the sub-regional unit of Mikkeli (101), and Joroinen (171), Juva (178) and Rantasalmi (681) were merged with the sub-regional unit of Pieksämäki (105).
012 Lohja: Merged with the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (100).
092 Länsi-Saimaa: Merged with the sub-regional unit of Lappeenranta (091).
Name changes of the sub-regional units:
141 Suupohja: In future the sub-regional unit will be called Suupohja even in Swedish-language contexts.
153 Sydösterbottens kustregion: The Finnish-language name of the sub-regional unit is Suupohjan rannikkoseutu and its Swedish-language name is Sydösterbotten.
Changes as of 1 January 2007
Lapua (408) was moved from the sub-regional unit of Härmänmaa (145) to that of Seinäjoki (142).
Mynämäki (503) was moved from the sub-regional unit of Vakka-Suomi (024) to that of Turku (023).
Punkalaidun (619) was moved from the sub-regional unit of Pori (043) to that of Lounais-Pirkanmaa (068).
The sub-regional unit of Kärkikunnat (094) was abolished, whereupon the municipality of Parikkala (580) was moved to the sub-regional unit of Imatra (093).
The sub-regional unit of Outokumpu (121) was abolished, whereupon the municipalities of Outokumpu (309) and Polvijärvi (607) were moved to the sub-regional unit of
Joensuu (122).
The sub-regional unit of Ilomantsi (123) was abolished, whereupon the municipality of Ilomantsi (146) was moved to the sub-regional unit of Joensuu (122).
The classification of sub-regional units is a classification compiled for national needs.
